Many Auto Insurers Investigating Premium Discounts in Coronavirus Relief Effort

4/14/2020

With Michigan's stay-at-home order most people are not driving anywhere near the miles that they normally do. With stay-at-home orders eliminating trips to work and the closures of many popular recreation options, there is expected to be a sharp decrease in auto insurance claims.

Because of this sudden and dramatic change in driving habits, many insurance companies are taking steps to return a portion of the premiums clients have paid for their auto insurance.
“These are challenging financial times for millions of Americans, and the country’s auto insurers are making it easier for their customers to get through this extraordinary time in U.S. history,” said Sean Kevelighan, CEO of the Insurance Information Institute.

On April 13th the Michigan Dept. of Insurance and Financial Services released a bulletin detailing the steps insurance companies must follow to submit any plans for premium returns in Michigan. While some insurance companies have already proposed potential return amounts, these reductions still require state regulatory approval. It is unclear how many insurance companies will ultimately submit plans to the State of Michigan to issue premium returns or how quickly these plans will become effective. In the event that your insurance company is approved for the issuance of premium returns, your insurance company will contact you directly on how this return will be delivered.

Insurance companies have also stepped up in other ways by donating to relief efforts, suspending policy cancellations, waiving fees and adding free coverages for identity theft, delivery services and other needs.

Frankfort Insurance hopes that you and your loved ones remain healthy during this challenging time. Due to recent developments we're providing another update on our response to COVID-19.

The Michigan Governor's office has issued Executive Order 2020-21 which becomes effective March 24, 2020. In this order workers in the insurance industry are listed as critical infrastructure workers to the extent which work is to be completed by phone or remotely. To comply with this order and proper social distancing measures we will only have one person in our Main Street office and the location will continue to be closed to visitors. Per the order, all day-to-day business must be transacted by either email or phone until at least April 14th.

You can reach Frankfort Insurance by phone at 231-352-9697, email
Andrew@Frankfort-Insurance.com or online at Frankfort-Insurance.com

With every day there are new challenges and we would ask for your patience in these difficult times. Please understand that our response time may be affected and that we are doing our best to make this as seamless a transition as possible.

Stay safe & healthy!

Business Insurance- Can it help with lost income from COVID-19?

3/20/2020

Amid the turmoil of our current situation many business owners have been contemplating the future and wondering how their business insurance policy may be of assistance. The question, "Will our business insurance cover a loss of income from COVID-19?" has been posed to me many, many times recently. While this question is quite straight forward the answer is not, and the topic has been an ongoing point of conversation in the insurance industry since the outbreak of this virus. The simple answer is that business policies will probably not provide coverage for loss of business income. I answer the question in this manner as not all commercial policies include the same policy language. Dependent on this, some policies may provide more of an avenue to argue the point for coverage than others. Most business policies are setup to help with business income loss caused by a physical loss to the business, such as a fire, lighting, windstorm, etc. With COVID-19 the loss of business income could very well not come from a direct physical loss to a business owners property.

The advice I have been giving my clients is to begin amending their business plans right now with the expectation that they will not be receiving any business income coverage. As well I feel it is wise for business owners to also begin gathering data regarding lost sales/bookings, returned funds and start compiling comparative data for submission in a potential claim. By doing both of these things they will be as prepared as possible going forward and ready to submit a claim if it comes to that. It is going to take some time for the insurance industry & the courts to work this topic through the system and allow precedents to be established. If down the road it turns out that the policy is able to afford coverage then it will be all the better for those businesses that were prepared.

For those who are interested in learning more on this topic and the current discussion, they can investigate the following articles. The first article is the least technical discussion of the three. The final two articles go fairly deep into the contract language and contain a lot of insurance jargon which may be more difficult to digest for those not accustomed to this field.
